In this session, artist Nanette Wallace will discuss and demonstrate the monotypes unique ability to capture a sense of light, form and energy with unpredictable, yet desirable results. While she primarily uses a printing press in her studio practice, a Gelli plate, (without a press), will be used to demonstrate techniques that are similar to her traditional monotype printmaking practice.

The monotype process is a responsive, immediate, and intuitive way to make original art printed on paper, not to mention it’s super fun!

Whether you are just getting started or are more experienced at making monotypes, this workshop will provide inspiration and techniques to help build a foundation for working intuitively while embracing risk taking in a way that can benefit your studio practice. While monotypes naturally lend themselves to simplification and quick gestural work, they are also brilliant for creating subtle effects and soft tonal ranges that are unique to the medium. I find that monotypes serve me best when I allow them to take on a life of their own, where unintended results become desired outcomes.

While I will primarily be making monotypes with a press using printmaking ink, most techniques can be supported and adapted to students working without a press using Gelli Plates or other hand printing methods you may be familiar with.

Please note that students will work from their own photo or inspiration. Additionally, I will support both representational and non-representational approaches to the medium/workshop.

Location: William Park Studio, Portland, Oregon
2637 NE Martin Luther King Jr Blvd ste a, Portland, OR 97212

Join us as we embrace the joy of monotype printmaking inspired by William Park, my dear friend and mentor. In this workshop we will create monotypes embracing the spontaneous essence of the monotype medium as our guide. The workshop will support various interpretations of your desired subject matter including representational, abstract, imagined, or direct observation. This workshop will include a combination of instruction and demonstration, with an emphasis on studio time. A range of additive and reductive monotype techniques will be covered, along with the use of stencils and color floods, with a focus on impulse, and experimentation.

It is possible that Bill/William Park may join us to create monotypes for part of this workshop if he is feeling up to it, it’s been since before his stroke that he created a monotype!

BIG NEWS!

My work is featured throughout a newly released printmaking/monotype book by a French publisher, AND, one can purchase it at the Louvre bookstore. My niece just returned from Paris, where she picked up a copy from this iconic location, and shot some awesome photos for me. Currently it is published in French and sold in France, Canada, Belgium and Switzerland... I hear they may translate it to English. But for the time being, you can simply fly to Paris and grab a copy at The Louvre. 😂 Or ask for it at any bookstore that sells art books in France, Belgium, Switzerland or Canada. In this workshop we will create monotypes outdoors, inspired by our surroundings at the beautiful Plas Newydd farm. This large family farm has a diverse landscape, located alongside the Lewis River, with rolling fields, mature forests, old barns, wild flowers and plenty of watery goodness to draw inspiration from, and a lovely farmhouse for us to take refuge in. Inspiration can take many forms when working in and around nature, and any direction that inspires you will be supported in this workshop, representational or non-representation. We will create one of a kind prints on paper, monotypes, with an emphasis on light, value, impulse, experimentation and joy!

Location:
This workshop will take place on a gorgeous private family-owned farm located 40 minutes north of Portland Oregon, in Ridgefiled Washington, alongside the Lewis River. (More About the farm here)

About the Instructors:
Nanette Wallace’s & Lisa Ellis will be teaching the workshop as a creative team. Nanette and Lisa met at art school in the early 90s and have been good friends in art and life ever since. As instructors they provide a balance of knowledge and support that is both insightful and encouraging.

This workshop was a lot of fun, hope to do another like it in again!
